First let's talk about Tarporley Village.

'A fabulous place to visit, work and live!!!'

Tarporley is an attractive town in the heart of Cheshire and was noted in Henry VIII's reign for having a long well-paved High Street, now equally attractive with good Georgian buildings and gabled houses. The medieval church of St Helen is 15th and 19th Century, and the Done Recreation Room in the churchyard dates from 1636, with the nearby oak-framed Manor House of 1585.

It is not known when the first identifiable settlement occurred at Tarporley however there are nearby ancient hillforts at Eddisbury Hill and Maiden Castle.

Tarporley was on the route used by many traders travelling by coach between London and Chester, and those dealing in salt, mined in nearby Nantwich.

The village developed along the High Street in the 18th and 19th Centuries with many hostelries to revive the weary traveller. The development of the Chester and Ellesmere Canal as part of the Shropshire Union canal system and the railway station at Beeston on the Chester and Crewe Railway line further increased the number of travellers.

The Genesis of Tarporley Health Store

Tarporley Health Store opened for business on Friday June 16th 2006. This followed an extensive project development process starting November 2005!

We moved to Tarporley in September 2005 and I decided to open a business in the village around November.



We researched the existing retail outlets in the village and as soon as we thought of opening a health store it just leapt out at us screaming this is exactly what Tarporley needs!



I have always used Natural Product (Health Stores) over the years as I suffered from Eczema, Hay Fever and Asthma as a child and have frequented many health stores over the years where I was living at the time. (Poynton, Wilmslow, Macclesfield, Manchester). I also very much wanted to put something back into the community and running a health store again leapt out at me saying that yes this could be a great business opportunity but also that it was a really ethical one that would support and assist local people from all walks of life.

So we waited for a retail opportunity to come up in the village and so when No. 2 Chestnut Terrace came up in January 2006 we snapped it up immediately.

The process of developing the business then commenced.







Initially this involved me calling five health stores I have used in the past and asking if I could visit them and ask them "Just what makes up a successful health store"?

To my amazement at the time everyone said "Yes"!

I therefore visited 5 different successful stores with my clipboard of questions in hand and was welcomed with open arms and allowed to ask anything I wanted to ask.

At the end of this process I was armed with a natural health bible of what works and more importantly what does not work. Plus a list of the Manufacturers, Wholesalers and Brands that I should look into dealing with and stocking. Invaluable information that would have cost me hundreds if not thousands of pounds to acquire in other ways.

This proved to be a real eye opener for me as from this point on I realised what a friendly and ethical business I was entering into and I can honestly say that this initial contact with the natural health industry has proved to be the same across the board!

From this point on the development of the business began in ernest. I engaged a Shop Fitter (Nigel Grindly) who with his hand picked team carried out an amazing total shop refit to a very high standard for us and is highly recommended. We went for a modern look without being cold and clinical using Ikea units throughout.



From my research I took on the most highly recommended brands right the way across the ranges of food, drink, supplements, sports nutrition and body care and this continues to develop as the months progress.

I took on my two fantastic 'Natural Health Advisors' Rose and Vanessa and we began our training 6 weeks before we opened. This continues today on an ongoing basis as we learn more everyday and with each new customer.

I also visited three natural products trade shows. One in Brighton, one in London and the latest this September in Harrogate.

a PC based natural health system. This is touch screen and can answer most questions and queries relating to either symptoms, or supplements / food and drink within the store. In effect this was like a fully trained member of staff on day one!

We also have access to dedicated help desks from all our supplement suppliers. (A.Vogel, Solgar, Viridian Nutrition, Quest). If we don't know the answer to your query then we certainly know a man, or woman who does!



Having gone through a 7 month development process we opened for business on Friday June 16th 2006. We are extremely happy to be open for business in Tarporley and offering the local community a natural alternative for the whole family.

Business has been excellent in the first three months and we have many regular customers, many we now count as good friends as well!

We have introduced a number of complementary therapies such as allergy / sensitivity testing, hypnotherapy, herbalist and iridologist which now all take place on site regularly.

Over the coming three months we will be fine tuning the store product mix and display by reducing the food and drink side of things slightly to allow us to expand the natural organic body care, home cleaning products and sports nutrition sections by Christmas time.

But don't worry natural food fans - I will be keeping everything that customers have been buying regularly during our first 3 months of business.
