STEPHEN O’BRIEN MP VISITS TARPORLEY HEALTH STORE 
IN SUPPORT OF THE CAMPAIGN TO:

‘SAVE OUR SUPPLEMENTS’

Shadow Health Minister and Eddisbury MP Stephen O’Brien, who has received a growing number of letters from worried constituents asking him to help prevent thousands of vitamin & mineral supplements from being wiped from the shelves of health food shops, paid a special visit to the award winning Tarporley Health Store on Friday 01 May, in support of the ‘save our supplements campaign’. During his visit he met with Director, Richard Thomas and his staff, as well as representatives from national campaigning groups to discuss the threat to Britain’s supplements businesses and retailers.

The threat comes from the EU Food Supplements Directive, which would deny millions of consumers across England and Wales their right to buy safe and effective higher dose food supplements. With maximum dose levels due to emerge from the EU in the next few weeks, it is already clear that these pernicious regulations risk damaging consumer health and putting many small businesses in jeopardy.

Stephen O’Brien has already written to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown calling on him to personally intervene and take up the matter with the President of the European Commission to block the likely decimation of the specialist supplements market.

Stephen O’Brien said: “I was delighted to be able to visit the award winning Tarporley Health Store and meet with Richard Thomas to discuss the threat posed to Britain’s thriving vitamin and supplements businesses by these ill-judged EU regulations.

“The EU should focus on what it was originally intended for - opening up trade across the continent – and not interfering unnecessarily in the daily lives of people in Cheshire and across Britain.

“Millions of people have been safely taking their supplements and vitamins on a daily basis for many years and having led this campaign 2 years ago, naturally I fully support them and have written directly to the Prime Minister to ask him to intervene on behalf of local consumers and health food shops like Tarporley Health Store.”

Our great worry is that not only is the consumers health choice going to be extremely limited by the interference of Europe but that this will impact on the high streets of the UK with Independent Health Store closures, job losses and money leaving the country via international internet sales for the products customers will no longer be able to buy in the UK but that will still be available to buy – for instance from America!

The products we sell help our customers maintain a healthy lifestyle preventing them having to clog up the NHS. If the products they have bought from us for many years disappear this is bound to have an impact on their long term health and put more pressure on the government funds to deal with Symptoms rather than us preventing those symptoms in the first place!
