Overseas
traveling is becoming increasingly common; in fact UK residents make almost
60 million visits abroad every year. Sadly many people have their precious
holiday time ruined by holiday illnesses. Feeling unwell on holiday can
be particularly unpleasant; you are away from familiar comforts and may
find communicating with non-English speaking pharmacist a challenge. Here
are a few tips so that you can try and make your holiday stress and illness
free!
Before
You Travel
•
Get pertinent health advice and up to date information by checking out
the National Travel Health Network and Centre. NaTHNaC’s website
can be found at www.nathnac.org/. This site has a whole section devoted
to common travel health concerns - just for travelers. Further health
risk information can be found by visiting the Foreign and Commonwealth
Office’s website www.fco.gov.uk/.
• If you are visiting a European Economic Area (EEA) country you
will need to apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to receive
any necessary healthcare at a reduced-cost or sometimes free.
• Look at the potential health risks of your destination and consult
your GP. They will be able to advise you on the relevant inoculations
needed or on simple precautions, and don’t leave the visit to the
last minute as sometimes jabs need to be done a few months in advance!
If you want to check which immunisations you need have a look at www.immunisation.nhs.uk/.
• Check if you have anything that you need to regularly get prescriptions
for, such as contraception, contact lenses, or have check ups for and
get things arranged in time for your holiday. It might be problematic
to get your current prescription while abroad and it can be easy to forget
until you are over there.
• Put together a small first aid travel kit, including essentials
like plasters, insect repellent, antiseptic and possibly water sterilisation
tablets.
• Get covered. Make sure you have suitable health insurance for
any journey, and then when you are away ensure you keep a copy of the
certificate on you.
While
You Are Traveling
•
Try to make your journey as comfortable as possible. Wear layers so that
you can respond to the varying temperatures. Take chewable sweets on the
journey to help avoid ear popping, this is especially useful if you are
flying.
• Nerves often contribute to feelings of nausea. If you are a cautious
traveler read a book to distract yourself from any unease. Use a travel
pillow to help you rest or sleep during the journey, and in the hours
preceding it try and avoid food and drink that are particularly rich.
To help relax remember to breathe evenly and deeply, even close your eyes
and picture a relaxing scene.
• To help avoid physical strain and circulation concerns during
your journey just keep these simple points in mind:
Remember
suitcases can sometimes be very heavy – especially on the return
journey! Remember to lift cases properly, bending your legs to avoid unnecessary
strain on your back. As far as is practical spread the weight by packing
more than one case or bag.
Long periods
of time confined in a small space can be mentally and physically draining.
If you are driving for a long time remember to get enough sleep before
the journey and to stop regularly for a rest. If you’re stuck on
a long haul flight or cramped into a coach or train, try and take regular
exercise to maintain healthy circulation or prevent the usual stiffness.
If you don’t feel able to get up you could try a few stretches in
your seat. You can flex and stretch feet, calves, arms, shoulders, and
wrists as well as your upper back and neck. This will help blood flow
to remain regular and healthy throughout the body. You could even try
some simple ‘Cabin Yoga’ relaxation, especially if you’re
a nervous passenger. Tense every muscle in your body working upwards from
your toes, and then gradually relax them one by one.
Try CabinGuard
– a Multinutrient and specific antioxidant combination to support
circulation and natural immunity – the natural choice when traveling
in confined or artificial environments.
While
You Are Away
•
When you plan your holiday you may need to consider what the drinking
water is like. In particularly exotic climes it may be necessary to only
drink bottled water, and be mindful and cautious of foods like salads
and fruits which may have been washed. Remember that this also applies
when you are brushing your teeth, so keeping a plastic tumbler and a bottle
of water in the bathroom is a good idea.
• Avoid shellfish (particularly uncooked varieties such as oysters),
ice cream and ice in drinks, and ensure your food is piping hot.
• If you are unlucky enough to end up with digestive disturbances
you may need to replace lost fluids by drinking re hydration mixtures
and this is especially important in the heat. If you suffer discomfort
for more than 3 days you should seek further medical advice.
• Look after your gastrointestinal system before you travel by topping-up
with friendly bacteria and pack TravelGuard for whilst you’re away.
TravelGuard is a pro biotic supplement combined with plant oils to help
support intestinal health – the natural choice for travelers.
• Be aware of stinging and biting animals and insects. Always take
care to look where you are walking and take the advice of local tourist
information about safe places to visit and swim. Always seek medical attention
if you are bitten or licked on the face by an animal while abroad.
• Protect yourself from the effects of the sun wearing a hat or
carrying a parasol in strong sunlight, especially between 11am and pm.
Be extra careful with any children in your care and give them T shirts
to wear in the sun. Remember to use factor 15+ sunscreen. Regularly apply
sun lotion throughout the day and afterwards remember to apply after sun
to allow your skin to rest and recover. Support your body by increasing
your levels of skin friendly antioxidants – try SolarGuard a specific
antioxidant formulation to nourish your skin when its sunny.
• Avoid dehydration in hot weather make sure you drink plenty of
water and continue to eat a mixed diet full of fruit and vegetables.
